Fractions – what’s their future??

Welcome Team Voyager 2008! Hey there Lovett’s Team Voyager! Welcome to Mrs. Gebel’s 6th grade team white math blog. We’ll use this format to respond to some math questions through the rest of this year. Each of you is expected to enter your first name and period and respond to the posted question. Include your nickname or the first initial of your last name if there’s another student on our team with your same first name. Since this is new to me too, we’ll enter this voyage together…
According to your textbook, “Although fractions are a very basic way of writing a portion of a whole, decimals are quickly replacing fractions in many areas.” Some people believe this to be true. The stock market is now quoted in decimals, while for years they used fractions! As early as 1979, mathematician Zalman Usiskin questioned whether fractions will become obsolete. He quoted a statement “Since both the metric system and the hand-held calculator use decimals, in twenty-five years common fractions will be as obsolete as Roman numerals are today.” Usiskin believed this to be a false statement. We’re beyond the 25 year mark and fractions are still around. What do you think? Interview adults about their jobs. Which do they use more – fractions or decimals? Why? Which do you think are more useful? Why? Your response should be at least one paragraph!!

I think that fractions will always be around. The person that I interviewed used decimals more, because he had to figure out the cost of stuff. I think decimals are more useful. I think that, because we use them more than fractions. I think fractions will always be around but decimals are more useful.

I interviewed my dad and my stepmom to see if they used fractions or decimals more. Both of them said decimals. My dad said decimals because his job requires him to use computation with decimals. My stepmom said decimals because her job requires her to deal with money.I think that fractions are more useful. For me it is easier to understand and use.Fractions clearly show a part of something. I use fractions and decimals in my life everyday.

First I Interviewed my Mom and she said she uses fractions more. She is an Interior Designer. She uses them more because she works with yardages with fabrics and trim. Next I interviewed my Dad and he said he uses Decimals more. He works with paper cutting machines. He uses Decimals more because he thinks that their easier to understand and the blue prints that he uses are all in decimals. I personally think that fractions are more useful. For me they are easy to understand. I use fractions in every day of life.

I have interviewed my dad who is the Director of real-estate at Barnes and Noble. He says that he rarely uses fractions and relies on decimal points more often. He uses decimal points to measure distances and also for value calculations because he relies on a calculator and it does not show fractions. When he looks at new locations in new areas throughout the country the locations are always expressed as decimal numbers in order to pinpoint the exact location he is looking at. I asked him how long it has been since he last used fractions and he said other than helping me with my homework he cannot remember the last time. He feels that the world has definitely moved in the direction of decimals and not fractions.

I will now interview my mom who is a housewife that helps take care of her children. She says when she goes to the grocery store and when she weighs things the scale uses decimals and not fractions. I asked her when she has had an experience with fractions and she said,” helping all her children with homework.” She also uses decimals in measuring ingredients for cooking. She thinks decimals are going to be used more in the future and she thinks they are more precise.

I interviewed my dad, and he said that he used decimals more at his job. He is a doctor and he said he used decimals more because he has to measure things in the arm or hand. If my dad has to measure the hand then he does it in decimals.
In my opinion, decimals are more important because you use them for money and you can convert them into fractions. You use decimals a little bit more in my opinion, whether it’s money or measuring. Decimals are clearer and more useful in my life.

I think fractions will always be around . I interveiwed my neighbor and my dad and they both said they use decimals more. My neighbor said that he uses decimals more when he is selling stock. He said that stockbrockers use decimals more than fractions. They started to do so about four years ago. They are eaiser to use if somone ten years ago bought a share of stock for twenty dollars a share and then tried to resell it he would sell it for 20 1/2 dollars. The goverment said that it was ripping the people off so now we use decimals so we can get more exact than 1/2 (50cents) 1/4(25cents) 18(12 1/2 cents) we can do like 20 dollars and 48 cent or whatever to give the customers a better deal. My father, who is a developer, uses decimals more because that is how he measures the sizes of lots to sell. It makes it eaiser for the customer to understand. I use fractions and decimals every day.

I think fractions will always be around because why couldn’t really do modern day things. i interviewed my dad and my next door neighbor to see if they used fractions or decimals more. My dad said he uses decimals more because he uses it to measure acreage because he is a developer . and my neighbor said he uses today decimals more because he is a stock breaker and today they use decimals but the present four years they used fractions think decimals are more useful because allot of jobs today involve money and i think money is easier to understand in decimals

I agree with Mr. Usiskin. Fractions give you a better understanding than decimals. It would be a lot easier if you said one half of one rather that .5 of one. Fractions really give you an idea of how much of something there is. It would be easier to say three fourths of all the oranges rather than .75 of all the oranges. As the world becomes more advanced and easier, I think fractions will be the unit of choice for most of the world’s population, since it is easier than decimals.
I interviewed my dad. In my dad’s business he uses decimals more than he does fractions. My dad is the owner for a moving and storage business called PODS. He uses decimals because when he has to tell his customers their prices of their POD he uses decimals for the money. Also, when he weighs a POD, the weight of the POD on the scale is usually represented in decimals. I know it doesn’t agree with my opinion but when it comes to money, I think it is always going to be represented in decimals. I think that the scale should be different though. The scale could actually be read, one half of a pound, or one fifth of a gram.

I think that decimals will stay around. My mom is in sales which uses fractions my mom still preferes decimals. I like to use decimals more than fractoins. though I use them every day more I use fractions I will still prefer to use decimals. My father is a banker and his job requires fractions and decimals. Although, both are pretty helpful.

I interviewed Mrs. Kalnin who is a is a teacher on the 6 white team. She uses decimals more because she uses them for balancing her checkbook and dealing with money. She helps students with fractions and thinks they’re important for certain jobs like construction or building things. I think decimals are more useful. More jobs use decimals other than fractions. I use decimals when i am counting my money.

I think fractions will always be around! First i interviewed my mom and she says that she uses decimals the most in her everyday life. Even thought my mom doesn’t have a job she still works as a mom. She says that she uses desimals a lot more while doing taxes and bills. Second i interviewed my dad he also said that he uses decimals more. My dad is a very busy man and is always working. He is an arcatect so he always has to use decimals! Personally i think that decimals are more useful in our everyday lives becasue you use decimals with money and most of us are using money everyday!!! I use decimals a lot even when I am not at school working in math class! I also think that decimals are a lot easier to deal with!

I interviewed my mom and she uses decimals more because she sells closes. She beleives that both fractions and decimals are usefull because she cooks and buys. I beleive that fractons and decimals are use ful because i use fractions because i love to cook, I use decimals because i help my mom sell her clothes and i love to shop!

My mom is a flight attendant, so I interviewed her. My mom uses math every time she works. She has to keep inventory and account for liquor and headsets sold on the plane. On international flights she has to know the exchange rate for foreign currencies and sell duty free in several different currencies. My mom finds decimals easier to use especially when dealing with money. I also like using decimals over fractions. I believe this because it comes easier to me and seems more natural.

For my blog i interveiwed my Dad, for a living he collects debt so he has to see peoples checking account and how much of the money they had just spent. He says that he uses fractions EVERY DAY!
He says that fractions will be a main factor in math all they way till college. My dad prefers decimals even though he cant always take the shortcut when it comes to presentations, so don’t think you may escape them, when you done with school.

I interviewed my mom and my dad! My mom is a real estate agent, so she has to deal with a lot of money in that business. She said she uses decimals more than fractions. She also said that it is a lot easier to use money with decimals other than fractions. When i interviewed my dad he said that he deals with decimals a lot more than he does fractions. He is in the granite company…. so he sells granite! That means that he deals with decimals a lot because of the money. Both my mom and my dad use decimals and fractions even when there out of work! They have to use them to pay the bills and taxes. I personally think that decimals are more common. I use decimals a lot more than i do fractions. I use fractions a lot out of math class! But fractions are still useful! fractions and decimals will always be around!

My housekeeper uses fractions more than decimals because she cooks a lot. My dad is an invester and works on our farm. He uses a lot of both he said. He said that if he had to say decimals because he measures a lot. He also uses percenteges a lot, which are decimals.

  • 17    Summer Daws // Jan 15, 2008 at 6:05 pm

I definetely think fractions will always be around. People have used fractions and decimals for a very long time so far, and I don’t think that they are about to go away, ever.
I interviewed my parents, and I figured out that my dad, uses fractions more than decimals. There was a point were my dad did not use fractions or decimals, and that was when he actually rescuing people from fires. Right now, he is designing, and building firehouses! Of course, this job requires the use of fractions to find the area of the room for the flooring, paneling, molding, ect.
My mom is part time substitue teacher and part time graphic designer. When my mom is a substitue teacher, she has to know and sometimes use fractions and decimals, depending on what type the class is currently learning. For graphic designing, my mom would mostly use decimals to find out how large or small she would like an image to be or what size would fit into another image.

I enjoy using decimals more. It gives you an exact number of something. I don’t know why, but I just this that decimals is easier to use, and is more commonly used in jobs. But who knows? =D

  • 18    Deen // Jan 15, 2008 at 6:18 pm

I interviewed my mom. She said she uses decimals more because she is a personal trainer and has to figue out weight, size, inches and calorie intake of clients. She also uses decimals for the accounting side of the buisness. She said that even though she uses decimals she still thinks fractions will be around. My dad is a lawyer for medical companies. So to see if a certain amount of medicine could get you sick or to see what the chances of you winning this case he says he favors fractions.
I think fractions will always be used but not as much as decimals. I don’t think they will ever become like roman numerals but more like a back up to decimals.

  • 19    Isabelle Heard // Jan 15, 2008 at 6:29 pm

I think fractions will be along for a long time! They are so useful. I interviewed my dad and mom. My dad says that he seldom uses fractions. He works in commercial real estate, which does not always require fractions. But he does use decimals a lot for calculations of real estate commissions and budgets. My mom says she uses fractions often, she is the chef in our family. My mom cooks breakfast, lunch and dinner. She has to use fractions to measure the amount of food she puts in the recipe. Out of decimals and fractions my mom says she uses decimals more often because she pays the bills and taxes. Fractions, decimals and percents are in everyday life and pretty much anything you need to do.

I interveiwed my mom and dad who are both owners of 2 UPS Stores. They both said that they used fractions the most. when they package something they tell me get out a 16 by 16 by 12 ect. and when they fill it with peanuts they say if its really fragile, fill 1/4 or 1/2 of the box then fill the rest up with lots of peanuts so its hard to close so u know if you packaged it right.

I perfer decimals because it seems so much easier and it’s easy to convert them into fractions.

I think fractions will always be around. I interviewed my mom and she said she uses decimals because deals with money a lot so she uses decimals very frequently. I personally think that decimal are more important than fractions because we will be dealing with money frequently in our lives and they are just more simple to than fractions.

I think in the future that nobody will use fractions. I think this because i interviewed my parents and niether of them use fractions because my dad is a builder and my mom is in the realestate. Eventhough they use a little bit of fractions they use decimals the most. Also i use a lot of decimals because if i am buying something.

I agree with Mr.Usiskin but I disagree too. I asked my Mom and she told me that she uses both decimals and fractions. She uses decimals when she is using money and doing her accounting. She told me that she uses fractions when she cooks. In her job she does not use fractions or decimals. Mom says that she probably uses decimals more than fractions.

First i interviewed my father who is a Suregon. He said he uses decimals more often because after a surgery he has to perscribe pain medicine for his patients. I interviewed my mother second who is a house wife and she said she used fractions more often because when she buys grocerys and dosent use a credit card. I believe I use fractions more often and i believe they are alot eaiser than decimals.

I interviewed my dad who is a doctor. He thinks that decimals are more useful! He also uses them in his job for when he is writing orders (persciptions, and drugs). I think that decimals are more useful also! Decimals are used in everyday things like money, checks and bills, and getting gas. Decimals are easier to me and as Sam says they come more natural!

I interviewed my mom. She is an art dealer so she would most likely uses decimals. She has to deal with taxes, booking parties, framing the art work, and most important selling the art work. She has to deal with a lot of money. So you would have to say decimals is most certainly what she uses on a daily bases but for framing the art work you have to use fractions. She also had to use fractions for the parties that she booked. So it is not out of her life. She also uses it for personal pleasures like shopping and buying good food for use to eat.

I think that fractions will always be around. I interviewed my mom who is a pediatric emergency physician (PEP). She said that she uses decimals more. she uses them when she weighs children, and when they deal with medicine. when they measure people they also use decimals.

I interviewed my parents for the decimals and fractions question. My mom says fractions and my dad says decimals. My mom is a cook and she usually sees fractions in recipies(she isn’t a pro. cook). My dad uses decimals more because he says he sees them everyday in the real estate business. I believe decimals are more important because I don’t exactly cook and i see decimals more when I go out to buy things. That is what i believe and my parents believe.

  • 30    Jake Mercer // Jan 15, 2008 at 8:54 pm

I interviewed my Dad whose job involves managing the budget for quarantine at CDC, therefore he handles money eveyday. He says that he rarely uses fractions. Instead he regularly analyzes the budget using decimals. He says that most people like to see numbers as proportions of the whole and decimals allow for this. He said when presenting numbers in the millions, decimals allow for better communication in graphs, reports and summary documents. For example, what percent of our budget is spent on medical supplies, salaries, and travel. For budget purposes, decimals are the way to go!

I believe that decimals are easier. You can multiply them fast than fractions, and they are easier to compare. That is why I prefer decimals.

  • 31    Gregory Johnson // Jan 15, 2008 at 9:01 pm

The person I interviewed was my dad. His job is being a stock/bond trader.
He used to use fractions more in his job but now he uses decimal because they are more accurate in setting or defining prices. He travels a lot to meet other finance managers of various institutions. Right now he’s concentrating on colleges and universities to invest there money. I agree with my dad that decimals are better because they are much more accurate and that its easier at figuring out how much you have to pay for something. If someone didnt understand fractions yet (like a first grader)and they were buying something and it costed 9 and 3/4$ then he/she wouldnt know how much to pay for it. But if it were 9.75 and he/she knew that it takes 100 cents to make a dollar then they could easily figure out how much they have to pay. I think that in the future we wouldn’t use fractions, but something much more accurate… even more accurate than decimals. But I think we won’t use fractions anymore in the future because the world would be more advanced and accurate.

  • 32    Virginia Dalton // Jan 15, 2008 at 9:04 pm

I interviewed my parents, Gail Dalton (my mom) and Booker Dalton(my dad). I’ll start with my mom first. My mom is a stay at home mom. She Likes Decimals better. She says she uses decimals more because she uses more decimals in prices of gas, money, intrist raits, and stock. My mom thinks decimal are more usefull. She thinks they are more useful because only a few fractions are helpful like 1/2, 1/4, and 1/3.

My dad is a Gastroenterologist at Peidmont Hospitol. He says he uses decimals more. He says he uses decimals more because that is they way the numerical results are reported in medicene. My dad think decimal are more helpful. He thinks decimals are more helpful because you can use decimals in a calculator and he also think they are more useful because in medicene all values are imported in metric units.
    Thank You!:)

I think that fractions will stay with us. Eventhough Zalman’s therory was possible, fractions are the building blocks to learning decimals. My dad was my fist brave victum that i intervewed. He works as the owner of SDA a program that finaces used car dealers. He said that he uses decimals way more in his work. Because he is in finace he uses decimals when debating with intrest and money. He also says that decimals are more use full in everything he does. this is because every fraction is a decimal and you have to convert them anyway, so it is a lot eaiser to start of with a decimal. for example (to add 3/4 + 3/4 it is easier to add .75 + .75) well that is 0 for 1, sorry Zalman!

my next victum was my mom she is a hard working houswife that cooks cleans and buys things. My mom said that she uses fractions more in her job at home. Fractions come up more becasue when she is cooking and has to put what ever the recipe calls for like 2/3 salt or 3/4 viniger. My mom has to know these things inorder to make the recipe correctly. My mother also thinks that fractions are more usefull because they are used everywere. What she means is tht you arnet going to live a life without seeing then and the come up all around you and are easier to express. well it turns out as a tie, oh well I thought the fraction were going to dissapeer (just kidding!!) -Cory Page -period7

One of the people that i interviewed is a succesful enginner. He works with wires all day, so if he needs to find out how long he needs a wire, he would use a measureing tape. this always leads to fractions. Another person that i interviewed was a parent on my basketball team. He also is very succesful person. He buys and sells the materials he needs for his bread company. So he needs to give a fraction to the amount of flour and whatever else he needs, so that way he will get the right amount of supplies. these are the few people that use fractions every day.

I think that fractions will always be around. The people that i interviewd 1 said decimals were more useful to them because the to deal with and things. The other said decimals were more important also. They said this because they have to calculate. I personally would probably say that decimals are more important because they would be useful more in an everyday life.

  • 36    melanie elam // Jan 15, 2008 at 10:47 pm

I personally think that fractions AND deciamels will always be around sothats what I say ,but my father and tutor both use decimals here is what they have to say:
Father: My father says that he uses decimals more than fractions becauseof interest rates example is 5.125 we refer interest rates as basis points example 1%= 100 basis points there for .5 point = 50 so basis points & cost of money for example 3.5 Millions has a decimal in it that and percentages.
Tutor: My tutor is a Spanish teacher is a spanish teacher and she says that she uses decimals more because when she does her grades she uses decimals because if she has to convert lets say 48 out of 50 she can easily change it to 96.0 easily also because when she goes to her computer easily and the grade will automaticaly go up.

Thats all I have to say peace out :-p

  • 37    Keith Holt // Jan 15, 2008 at 11:05 pm

My mom is a school teacher so i interviewed her. She says that Decimals are easier because she uses it in terms of money. Also you can get a smaller, more accurate number or part of a number. With fractions you have to pick a denomenator close to that number then do lots and lots of computation to figure out the numeretor when all that you have to do is use decimals to write down your answer in a simple manner. Also with adding and subtracting with decimals its just like regular numbers except with a period in front of them.
